Formulas in Salesforce Flow are like silent algorithms working behind the scenes, ensuring that the platform’s automation capabilities are both dynamic and intelligent. They infuse logic into automated processes, allowing businesses to tailor flows that match their unique requirements and conditions. Whether calculating discounts, transforming data, or deciding which email template to send a customer, formulas are pivotal in making these automations precise and effective.
In this blog, you will learn.
- Step-by-step guide on how to create formulas in Salesforce Flow.
Let’s walk through a straightforward example to clarify the process of adding a text formula and utilizing the “Add” operator within a workflow. In this specific case, we’re focusing on a workflow designed to update account descriptions.
Step 1: Create a Formula
Begin by clicking “Toggle Toolbox” to reveal the Toolbox. Then, click “New Resource.” Choose “Formula” as the “Resource Type” and name it “frmChangeDateNote” under “API Name.”
Even though we are dealing with a date, opt for “Text” as the “Data Type” to ensure the result is in text format.
In the “Formula” field, enter: `”Shipping Address added on ” & TEXT({!$Flow.CurrentDate})`.
Insert “$Flow > Current Date” within the parentheses. Confirm the formula by clicking “Check Syntax” and finish by clicking “Done.”
Step 2: Update the Account Description
Next, click on the “Copy Billing Address” element and select “Edit Element.”
Add an assignment by clicking “+ Add Assignment.” In the “Variable” field, select “Account” from “Get_Account_Data,” and then select “Description” (the variable to update).
Choose “Add” as the operator and select “frmChangeDateNote” (the formula with the text value) in the “Value” field. Complete this step by clicking “Done.”

Step 3: Save the Flow
Save the workflow. As a result, when the “Update Records” element updates the account, the Description field will now incorporate the modified text, such as “Shipping Address added on 03-02-2023.”
Note: If you are simply combining two texts without conversion, you can manually add a space before the new text in the “Value” field, as mentioned in the note at the end. This example illustrates how to incorporate a text formula to alter a field’s value and how to apply the “Add” operator to update the field with the new value.
Conclusion
Formulas in Salesforce Flow empower businesses by injecting tailored logic into automation processes, ensuring that every action is as precise as it is impactful. As illustrated, crafting formulas, even ones that involve text manipulation, can be straightforward when broken down into systematic steps. Harnessing the full potential of these formulas can lead to advanced, efficient, and intelligent workflow automations tailored to suit the diverse needs of every organization.
